on work and responsibilities of teachers who plan and participate in educational trips (in fact for many "trips")


Dear students and parents,
I decided to write this note to tell you my experience as a teacher who has to his credit at least thirty more days of travel with students in Italy and 'abroad. Travel, fortunately, a happy ending. I'm still here to tell so many episodes that could have tragic endings, almost all to be charged with conduct "reckless" by some students.
This note also wants to remind us what is the work that teachers do before, during and after the "outing" of course if you believe and we work really seriously.
To plan your trip and prepare the program of educational activities with colleagues, students and the secretariat, should be given at least ten hours, more 'outside normal working hours and unpaid.
During the journey we must have under control, by law, a maximum of 15 students, but it often happens that a colleague, volunteer tourists, "forget" her, and then become more.
work activities that the teacher plays are:
- control of all travel documents;
- monitoring and verification for embarking on trains, planes, ships, coaches;
- control and solution of all problems and emergencies that may occur during the journey;
- check-in and check-out with the hotel keeper for all persons involved (allocating rooms, collecting money for deposits, taking responsibility for monitoring);
- control during visits to monuments and museums, "walk" in the city and stops for meals (in fact we are not allowed by law to leave him alone students, if not of age, to go out to eat, although many do so at their own risk);
- check that all students remain in the rooms to sleep at night (The law gives the teacher the right to rest pre NIGHT least 8 hours, but in fact I slept more than four hours due to the disregard for the silence on the part of students and I often had to deal with the complaints of the hotelier next morning).
Often, as the final part of the organization is necessarily left to the secretary and travel agent, the initial program to be changed at the last minute with the inability to achieve its goals in programming (monuments and museums that can no longer visit, wrong time, bus drivers and no longer available). Accordingly, we must be assumed for accompanying teachers the burden of reprogramming activity ongoing, often heated discussions with agencies and drivers, cash advances and phone calls at our expense.
All this work a few years ago it was recognized with the 'COMPENSATION' mission, "which, however miserable (for a six-day trip to Paris, I paid 240 Euro net) was paid for travel in Italy and abroad. Today NOT BEEN 'paid this allowance. The teacher must be content to have only paid the travel and accommodation. The 16 minimum hours per day, the meals and responsibilities are all AGAINST HIM!
Some students and parents, with "great outpouring of generosity "Have even proposed making a collection to give teachers a refund. No, we strongly reject this idea because we do not accept charity, and we want that all our work is officially recognized and adequately paid, not to mention that everything is in the public school already been paid by households through taxes (this applies to those who pay ...)
Also remember that the teachers and the Faculty Council are not required, by law, to organize and carry out "trips" because it is additional assets and the same High School Levi POF, while recognizing that if well organized can be a useful classroom activity, considers OPTIONAL.
Please read carefully what the Board of the Levi approved October 28, 2010 and TEACHING reasons that led to the decision SUSPENSION of trips of several days, these are the issues on which we must discuss.
For the reasons I stated above I believe that teachers attribute (perhaps accusing them of being lazy) the blame for the tragic state of affairs that brought us all Italian governments for years, with the backing and / or silence by the unions, is a serious mistake.
We and you, parents and students are the victims of those who have no interest in investing for the proper functioning of the public school. I hope
